Tom and I from our trip to Norway

Rollo m Pickering, Thomas J. Maj. - English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science; Service Club, pres.; SAO Board, Techoir, Red Cross Club.

It’s been fascinating to catch up on the lives of so many.  It seems in some ways like yesterday when we put on our caps and gowns and faced both with joy and more than a little trepidation one of life’s great milestones.

After leaving Tech I attended and graduated from IU with a BSN.  While there I met my husband, Tom.  We were married six months after he began his military service.  What we thought and originally hoped would be a short stint added up to over 21 years of military life.  Along the way we welcomed our oldest daughter, Jenny (now a special education teacher in the Hamilton Heights School District).  A mere 10 years later, Leigh Anne (a CADD specialist at Stoeppelwerth Engineering in Fishers) arrived.

Despite moving 17 times during those years and experiencing both the many joys as well as some of the woes of military life, we cherished the privilege of being a part of such a great “family.”  We lived in many places in the US and also spent three years in Bad Kreuznach, Germany.  While there I was the school nurse for the elementary and high schools (Department of Defense Schools Europe).  That was quite an experience!  Tom’s last tour was at Ft. Benjamin Harrison.  Once close to home and family we quickly realized it was time to settle down.  Nonetheless, it was difficult to leave active military life.  We are humbled by the outstanding soldiers who serve today despite tremendous demands placed upon them and their families.

We built a house in Fishers and I returned to IU for my MSN and certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner.  After stints at the then Indiana State Board of Health and Methodist Hospital, I ended up working for HealthNet Community Health Centers.  There I got involved in redesigning work processes and to make a long story at least a bit shorter, that led to over 12 years of health care redesign consulting across the country and beyond.

Once our daughters left home Tom and I decided it was time to pursue our dreams of returning to the Seattle area.  While in the military Tom had two assignments at what was then Fort Lewis (now Joint Base Lewis McChord).  We learned to love the country during that time.  So we did the unforgivable.  We sold the family house and moved to DuPont, Washington.  Our daughters figured this was a post mid-life crisis but begrudgingly supported our decision.  So we’ve been here since 2004.  Tom began teaching at Pierce College.  I continued consulting but the years as a road warrior and the increasing headaches of travel took their toll.  Two years ago I accepted an offer to join the Pierce College faculty and now I teach medically related courses both “live” and also online.  It’s been an interesting transition and although I still miss my consulting work I’ve found I love teaching.  Tom and I have an intense love of learning and helping others to learn.

The years as a military family instilled within us another love – that of travel.  So we continue working on our “bucket list.”  We’ve enjoyed many wonderful trips and look forward to many more.

Last year we took another big step and built a house back in Indy.  We know we’ll return there soon as the love of family as well as the realization that the years are beginning to add up remind us of the need to “return home.”   We anticipate the move back in the next few years.

We celebrated Leigh Anne’s wedding (to another Tom!) two years ago in Jamaica.  This coming summer brings Jenny’s wedding in Indy.  That, combined with my teaching contract that go into June will probably rule out a return for the reunion.  That’s quite disappointing, but trust that my thoughts and best wishes will be with all during that very special time.

Had to share – this was our sunrise this morning – absolutely spectacular of Mt. Rainier!   You can see why we love it here.

I’d love to hear from any who may remember.   Pat

I think their names were David and Raymond; maybe one or both are in the Indianapolis phone book. If Sue is found, I'd love to get in touch with her. (Carol (Safford) Gralia 5/13/07)

Classmates.com - Cycling, gardening, sailing, skiing, swimming, walking, working gout, dancing, drawing/painting, dogs. I didn't finish high school with my class. Instead, I married very young and had two wonderful children. My parents were considered past the age that people have children. My Mother was almost 50 when I was born and my Father eight years her senior. They were both quite ill and I dropped out of school to help take care of them. I wasn't given the direction I needed so an early marriage took place that did not work out. I remarried several years later to an attorney. Together we finished raising my children and divorced in 1991. I was single until 1996, at which time I married again and this time for keeps.

I finished my high school education during all those years and moved on to College, graduating in 1978 with my degree in business and accounting. I went to work in an accounting firm and was there for several years before being sent to a credit union to establish systems that would create a viable way of completing a merger that took place between six school credit unions. The remaining credit union was named Central Indiana Schools and offered membership to school employees in: Perry, Pike, Wayne, Greenwood, Franklin, Carmel, Washington, Plainfield, IPS, Speedway township school corporations. My position was President/CEO of CIS and was held for 27 years, with my retirement in 2007. I worked very hard during all of those years and loved my work.

My Board of Directors did not want to hire someone to replace me so I found a merging partner, Forum Credit Union, and merged with them in August 2007. The completed merger allowed me to retire.

My husband, a teacher at Washington Township Schools- North Central High School, retired at the end of 2007. We leased a new home in Venice Florida and spent January 2007 thru May 2008, there. We decorated, bought furniture and started basically over so that our home in Florida would be as nice as our home in Carmel, Indiana. We found a Methodist Church that we both like that is close to our Florida home and we enjoy going there and making new friends. We recently bought a condo that is the perfect size for us. It is 2 bedrooms and 2 baths and we are in the process of moving into it now. Retirement, I find, is the best part of life. If you have your health and have both money and time, a winning combination but one that we worked really hard to obtain, it is a state of being that tops everything other part of life except the special times like having your children or grand children. I have 5 grandchildren. Two are girls and three are boys and they are all terrific kids.

I have enjoyed my life and I hope that all of you have enjoyed yours as well.
